Jake is a female hyena born in 2010. She arrived at Octagon in 2013. Her original owner raised her for a year without a legal permit in his Miami apartment. He voluntarily placed her in a wildlife facility before FWC confiscated her. Jake was at two other facilities before finding her forever home with us. She enjoys playing with boxes, phone books, dipping her chicken in the pool before eating it and just chillin' in the sunshine on her back. She's very vocal with the volunteers and "smiles" when we talk to her. She gets very excited at feeding time and really "whoops" it up! That is the sound a hyena makes when they are excited or happy. Hyenas lifespan in the wild is about 12 years, but they can live up to 25 years under human care. You can see Jake on an episode of "Fatal Attractions" on Animal Planet, episode, "My Pet Hyena".
