Volunteering / Community Service / School Credit
Want to interact with the animals? Volunteering is a great way to do it. Octagon is always looking for more help at the sanctuary. We accept help for as little as a few hours or really appreciate people who can commit to more time. Many Florida students are required to do Community Service for School Credit in order to graduate and Octagon is recognized in the area for this. We even invite local groups looking to provide charity work. Here is a sample of the work we ask our volunteers to do:
- Fill water dishes *
- Clean habitats/enclosures *
- Separate and prepare food
- Feed animals
- Lawn and grounds keeping
- General structural maintenance
* Volunteers under 18 may be limited to the aviaries and small non-venomous reptile habitats. Only upon authorization from an accompanying experienced volunteer will others access be granted.
The list below are some of things to consider before volunteering:
- Weather - Depending on the time of year, the sanctuary can become HOT and during rainy season, quite muddy.
- Commitment of day, date, or time - Be realistic about the number of hours you can commit to volunteering.
- Wardrobe - For safety reasons, we require close toes shoes, blue jeans or heavy weighted material pants, and t-shirts/sweatshirts (preferably all old, as you WILL get dirty!)
- Food and Beverages - Due to the location of the sanctuary, it is best if you bring something to eat and drink that you like. We do have a limited supply of water, juice and some snacks for the volunteers at the sanctuary. There is a food mart within a mile or two should you want to stop on your way.
- Sun Protection - To further protect yourself, wear sunscreen, hats, and/or sunglasses as most of the work is done out in the open.
If you are interested please call the Sanctuary at (239) 543-1130 and leave a clear detailed message. Please be patient as it may take a day or two to return your call. Volunteers are needed at the Sanctuary:

- Mondays - Fridays starting at 9:00 am

- Length of time varies based on daily needs
